Originating in the mid nineteenth century in Leonberg, Germany, these wonderful weatherproof family dogs are arguably the oldest of the German pure breeds. Although, well known in France, Germany and Scandinavia, they are considered a rare breed in this country.

One of the Giant breeds, the Leonberger is powerful and elegant.  Females stand 26-29 1/2 inches and weigh more than 100 pounds. Males are considerably larger, standing  28 1/2-31 1/2 inches at the shoulder and weighing as much as 170 pounds. Males also show off the Lion Mane around three years of age. Their luxurious double coat is Lion colored, ranging from a light mahogany to dark brown. accented by a black mask and often black tips on the body fur. Their noble and impressive appearance, are complimented by dark almond eyes, and an open friendly expression. They are a tight lipped breed and do not drool as their cousins the Newfoundland, Mastiff and St. Bernard do. This makes them very appealing as house dogs, at least for us.!

In over thirty years of being involved with dogs ( both hunting and working dogs) we have never encountered such a sweet, always willing, and incredibly intelligent breed.  This breed is extremely gentle with children and make absolutely wonderful family pets.

Our " Lean-on-bergers" are just another one of our family members and will make a wonderful addition to your family.
